Men, oh men. We are wired to pursue a mission. This primal drive, etched into the core of masculinity across centuries, remains as vital for the modern man as it was for his ancestors. Inspired by Brittany’s article, How to Become His Muse, and coincidentally, a heartfelt conversation with a friend a few weeks ago where I admitted to missing my own ‘muse’ due to circumstances I hold myself accountable for, I find myself compelled to explore the timeless essence of manhood. For many men, myself included, a muse - whether a woman, a family, or a higher purpose, or ideally all of them combined - ignites the spark to strive, to conquer, and to live the adventure. That’s the timeless nature of masculinity, the necessity of a quest, the pursuit of excellence, and the challenges facing men in a world that often lulls them into complacency.
Masculinity Through the Ages
Masculinity has always been defined by purpose, action, and resilience. In ancient times, men were hunters, warriors, and builders, their worth measured by their ability to protect and provide. The Greeks celebrated the heroic ideal - men like Achilles, whose pursuit of glory drove them to face impossible odds. Medieval knights embodied chivalry, blending strength with honour in service to a lady, a king, or God. The Renaissance man sought mastery in art, science, and combat, epitomizing the pursuit of excellence across disciplines.
Across cultures and eras, masculinity has been synonymous with striving - against nature, enemies, or personal limitations.
This striving is not mere physicality but a quest for meaning. Men are wired to pursue a mission, to face trials, to build, and to achieve. As I shared with my friend, I am one of those men who need a muse to move forward, to find purpose, to embrace the adventure.
For many, a woman becomes that muse - a source of inspiration to improve, to endure hardship, and to achieve greatness. This is not dependency but a symbiotic force, where love and purpose intertwine to propel a man toward his potential.
Historically, this dynamic was celebrated, from the muses of poets to the queens who inspired kings. Today, it remains a powerful motivator, though often misunderstood in a culture that equates independence with isolation.
There is a reason for the proverb "Behind every great man is a great woman"!
The Modern Decline of Masculinity
Yet, masculinity faces a crisis. We live in a society surrounded by cowards, where comfort and complacency erode the drive to strive. Difficulties, once seen as challenges to overcome, now loom like insurmountable mountains, tempting men to take the downward slope of laziness and mediocrity. As Simple Man recently posted, quoting C.S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters,
the most dangerous spiritual path lies in subtlety - distractions, small compromises, and complacency. These are the silent killers of the modern man’s soul, luring him away from his quest with the promise of ease.
The decline is evident in alarming trends. Physical fitness among men is waning, with obesity rates climbing. Mental resilience is eroding, with rising rates of anxiety and depression. Purpose is elusive, as many men drift through life without a clear mission. The idealized man - strong, driven, honourable - is increasingly rare, replaced by a caricature of masculinity that is either toxic or emasculated. This is not to say men are inherently flawed; rather, society has failed to nurture the conditions that allow masculinity to thrive.
Comfort has dulled our edges, and distractions have clouded our vision.
The Muse: A Catalyst for Greatness

In this context, the need for a muse becomes ever more critical. A muse is not just a romantic ideal but a catalyst for purpose. For some, it is a woman whose presence inspires them to be better - stronger, wiser, more disciplined. For others, it is family, the responsibility to protect and provide. And for many, faith is the cornerstone. Belief in God, or a higher power, anchors a man, giving him a moral compass and an unshakable foundation.
Once a man has his muse, his family, and his faith, he becomes unstoppable.
These elements converge to form a trinity of purpose, propelling him to face trials, endure suffering, and achieve excellence.
The muse is not a passive figure but an active force. A woman who inspires a man challenges him to rise above mediocrity. She is his partner in the quest, not a prize to be won but a reason to strive. This dynamic is beautifully captured in Brittany’s article, which underscores the power of a woman to awaken a man’s potential. Similarly, family grounds a man, giving him a tangible stake in the future. Faith elevates his mission, connecting it to something eternal. Together, these forces transform a man from a wanderer into a warrior, from a dreamer into a doer.
The Quest: Trials and Triumphs
The quest is the crucible in which masculinity is forged.
It is not enough to have a muse; a man must act, striving for excellence through trials and triumphs. This quest takes many forms - building a career, raising a family, mastering a craft, or serving a cause.
What matters is the pursuit itself, the willingness to face hardship and emerge stronger. The modern man must reject the temptation of comfort and embrace the discomfort of growth.
As C.S. Lewis reminds us, the path of least resistance leads to spiritual ruin. True masculinity thrives in adversity, where character is tested and refined.
Consider the archetype of the hero’s journey, a narrative as old as humanity. The hero leaves the ordinary world, faces trials, and returns transformed. This is a blueprint for manhood. Every man is called to his own journey, whether it’s overcoming personal demons, building a legacy, or standing firm in his beliefs. The quest demands courage, discipline, and sacrifice - qualities that define the idealized man. It is through striving that a man discovers who he is and what he is capable of.
Striving for Excellence in a Complacent World
Excellence is the hallmark of true masculinity, but it is not achieved without effort. In a world that celebrates mediocrity, the modern man must be intentional in his pursuit. This means cultivating physical strength, mental clarity, and moral integrity. It means setting goals that stretch his limits and holding himself accountable. It means rejecting the distractions of endless entertainment and the complacency of “good enough.” Excellence is not perfection but the relentless pursuit of better.
Faith plays a pivotal role in this pursuit. For me, belief in God (or a higher power/intelligence) provides not only purpose but also perspective. It reminds me that my quest is part of a larger story, one that transcends my own desires.
Faith instils humility, teaching a man to serve rather than dominate, to build rather than destroy. Whether through religion or a personal code, a man’s beliefs shape his actions, guiding him toward excellence.
Toxic feminism doesn’t help either. As Rita on X recently posted:
Women want a good man until they realize that a good man comes with lots of discipline, boundaries, accountability, selflessness, transparency, priority, communication, commitment, & compromise. Suddenly, she labelled him toxic, manipulative, controller, wicked & narcissistic.
A Call to Action
Men, oh men, we are wired to pursue a mission. The modern world may seek to tame us, to lull us into complacency, but we must resist. Find your muse, whether it’s a woman, a family, a cause or all combined. Anchor yourself in faith, whatever form it takes. Embrace the quest, with all its trials and triumphs. Strive for excellence, not for applause but for the man you were created to be. As C.S. Lewis warns, the subtle path of compromise is the most dangerous. Choose the harder road, the one that leads to greatness. The world needs men - real men - who dare to live the adventure.
This is spot on. A quick, substantial read, absolutely necessary for men of all ages to read and re-read. Thank you!
